Grades 7-12: Social Studies

This certification requires students to complete their degree plan as prescribed by their major as well as the course work listed below. The certification sought must match the student’s academic major.

  • 12 hours English
  • 3 hours science
  • 6 hours history
  • 6 hours government
  • 3 hours mathematics
  • 3 hours public speaking OR official documentation certifying professional effective oral communication and presentation skills
  • 3 hours of fine arts
  • 9 hours of electives
  • 48 hours from history, government, economics and geography content courses from student’s degree plan. These hours reflect the student’s concentration from these four content areas. Students will earn hours credit in a 24 hour-12 hour-6 hour- 6 hour configuration.
  • ED 3314: American Public School
  • PSY/ED 3339: Educational Psychology
  • ED 4353: Reading in the Secondary Content

The following courses are restricted and require official admission to the Teacher Certification Program.

  • ED 4361: Classroom Management, Secondary (including field based experience)
  • ED 3382: C&I Social Studies
  • ED 4372: Educational Technology
  • ED 4694: Clinical Teaching/Student Teaching, Grades 7-12 (14-16 weeks, Monday-Friday, full days)

The following course is a highly recommended elective:

  • ED 4351: ESL (English as a Second Language) for EC-12 Teachers
  • BIS 4306: Strategies for Diversity in Education
