Grades 4-8: English, Language Arts and Reading

This certification requires students to complete their degree plan as prescribed by their major as well as the course work listed below. Students may choose to be enrolled in the School of Interdisciplinary Studies for their major.

  • 12 hours English
  • 3 hours science
  • 6 hours history
  • 6 hours government
  • 3 hours mathematics
  • 3 hours public speaking
  • 3 hours of fine arts
  • 24-27 hours of English/literature content courses from student’s degree plan
  • ED 3314: American Public School
  • ED/PSY 3339: Educational Psychology
  • ED 3315: Children’s Literature
  • ED 4352: Reading I
  • ED 4363 Reading II (Prerequisite ED 4352)
  • ED 4357: Diagnostic Reading (Prerequisites ED 4352 & ED 4363)
  • ED 4351: ESL (English as a Second Language) for EC-12 Teachers
  • ED 3380: C&I (Curriculum & Instruction) English (fall only)
  • ED 4372: Educational Technology
  • ED 4361: Classroom Management
  • ED 4694: Clinical Teaching
  • Other Required Courses for Certification:
  • LIT 2350: Close Reading
  • LIT 3339: Writing in Literature Studies
  • LIT 3330: Linguistics OR BIS 4306: Strategies for Diversity

All education courses are RESTRICTED. You must be admitted into the TDC before registering for education courses. Students submit a registration form to the TDC and we will register the student.
